Last Saturday and Monday, there were presentations at Beddington Village Hall about a proposed new use for the old County Skips site on Beddington Lane (on the left hand side of the road travelling north on Beddington Lane opposite the bus garage).
Councillors Foster and Mattey visited the exhibition on Monday and we asked how many people had visited on Saturday and were told four – Chair and Vice Chair of the Beddington North Neighbourhood Forum, a Beddington South Councillor and your local MP, Tom Brake.
It was not much busier on Monday and we thought it important that even if you were unable to make it to the presentation, then you should at least have sight of it.

Previous administrations have designated the site for waste usage and there is existing planning permission for its use in that industry. Councillor Mattey and others are far better qualified to comment on the technical / industrial proposals but there is major concern about traffic implications.
The Beddington Lane improvement scheme will ban HGV traffic over 7.5 tonnes from driving through Beddington Village. That means that all the traffic from this SUEZ development will be channelled north and out on the same Coomber Way route as the Incinerator traffic.
Numerically, SUEZ state that there will be 343 “operational vehicles visiting the site daily – that actually means 686 additional vehicle movements on Beddington Lane daily.
The Local Plan has also allowed the re-assignment of Metropolitan Open Land close to the Incinerator for industrial use and, whilst there are not yet firm proposals, discussions are progressing on the idea of warehousing, which means more HGV traffic.
So add two bus garages to the mix and we believe that congestion and pollution make the position untenable.
Beddington North Councillors proposed that rather than look at traffic impact studies on individual applications, that an overall Traffic Impact study should be undertaken and that approach has been tentatively agreed by Officers of the London Borough of Sutton.
But please, where there is an opportunity for public consultation, take that opportunity to voice your opinion – before the event it has impact, when decisions have been made, it’s too late – they don’t get reversed!

The traffic is bad enough as it is, can they guarantee that the lorries will use coomber way, not Beddington village! There’s enough pollution in this area.
The traffic currently using Beddington Lane is non stop all day, every day. Walking along Beddington Lane is a very unpleasant one, getting splashed with mud when raining and dust when it’s dry. The actual road is constantly covered in grit, rocks and paint which appear to spill onto the road making it a hazard to drivers, together with the discarded nails which appear in my car tyres resulting in a regular unnecessary cost to our family. Beddington Lane is already congested by huge lorries and the thought of even more of the same is unthinkable. Pollution in this area will already worsen when the incinerator fires up so adding additional lorries and HGV’s to the area is a serious threat to local residents. Mixing commercial and residential is not ideal at the best of times but to constantly add more and more industrial buildings and vehicles is making the area very unpleasant for those who live here. I have lived here for 26 years and have been happy here until recently with the incinerator, constant roadworks, horrendous traffic and so much dust that our family car is constantly covered.
As residents we not only have problems exiting onto Beddington Lane, for a start these companies cannot guarantee that their drivers will use Coomber Way particularly as articulated lorries as well as cars and vans parked on Coomber Lane affect anyone trying to use this road. Add to the fact you have all the traffic to and from Asda, Wickes, Travis Perkins the up and coming incinerator traffic which will start on August, need I go on!! There is no justification for adding to the traffic on Beddington Lane and that’s before you even start with the pollution generated, the decrease in residential standard of living not to mention the decrease in house prices, already 6.8% since last year. Why don’t you just do compulsary purchases and turn the whole area into an industrial waste land. Please do enlighten me as to how anyone can guarantee no industrial traffic will come through Beddington Village, how is anyone going to ensure the local residents and the school children will not have long term damage to their health? Who is going to monitor pollution levels and ensure they are not exceeded on a regular basis? Do tell me how many of Sutton Councillors would now be prepared to move to Beddington?

I think that a leaflet drop from the three local independent Beddington North councilors is required explaining the truths about the proposal and what we as members of the public can do to assist yourselves in fighting thiß.
